Field Hockey Triumphs Over Neumann, 4-1, In Season Opener

DOYLESTOWN (PA) – The Delaware Valley University field hockey team opened its 2019 campaign in style as four different players scored in the 4-1 home triumph over Neumann University.

The Aggies (1-0), under the new NCAA format of four 15-minute quarters, dominated the first stanza and outshot the Knights 9-1 including a 7-0 advantage in shots on goal. Just under 10 minutes into the game, junior Samantha Collyer got the scoring started with DelVal's first of the season. Maiya Wendel found the loose ball after a scramble in front of the cage and got it over to Collyer who poked it home. It was the first collegiate point for the sophomore from Southbury, Connecticut, Wendel.

In the second quarter, the Aggies had three straight corner opportunities and were able to cash in the last. Senior Mackenzie harper collected an attempted clear by the keeper and ripped a low shot from eight yards out into the back of the cage for her first collegiate goal and a 2-0 lead.

The game evened out through the second half as each team had two shots on goal with Neumann holding a 3-2 edge in corner opportunities, but it was DelVal that maintained the advantage on the scoreboard.

After a scoreless third quarter, the Aggies scored two in a span of seven minutes to increase its lead to 4-0. Jess Dixon deflected a shot by Adrianna Ruggieri into the cage as the junior transfer, Ruggieri earned her first point in the green and gold. Moments later, senior Madi Colon rounded out the scoring with her first of the season as she lifted one into the cage after a scramble in front.

In the waning moments of regulation, the Knights finally broke through as Rachel Koerner gathered a loose ball and poked it home and Erica D'Mello picked up the assist for the 4-1 final.

DelVal held a 17-7 advantage in shots on goal in the game led by seven from sophomore TJ Smith and four from Gillian Nardelli. Kita Konerth played all 60 minutes in the cage and made six saves.

For Neumann, Lizzie Yu made 13 saves in goal and Koerner came off the bench to contribute three shots on goal including the lone tally.

The Aggies will look to make it two in a row when they travel to take on Albright College on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
