Men's Lax Drops MAC Freedom Opener To FDU, Despite Six Assists From Smith

DOYLESTOWN (Pa.) -- Senior Jordan Smith set the program record for assists in a single-game with six dimes on Wednesday afternoon, but it was not enough as host Delaware Valley University dropped the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom opener to visiting FDU-Florham, 13-9.

The Aggies saw their program-best four-game win streak come to an end as they dropped to 5-5 overall while the Devils jumped to 5-3.

FDU-Florham scored the first three goals of the game, two from John Belanger, in 6:42 to take an early 3-0 lead. DelVal responded with two quick goals from freshman Ben Napieralski to pull within one, but the Devils countered with a goal from Tyler Garcia off a feed by John Guido to make it, 4-2.

Before the end of the first stanza, Napieralski set up Smith for his only goal of the game to cut the lead to 4-3 going into the second.

The Aggies scored first in the second quarter and the teams went back and forth for the remainder of the stanza. DelVal scored three assisted goals by three different players as Smith set up Dylan Brasch to start the scoring. Later, Bryan Thompson found Brandon Keller immediately after a face-off before Smith got his third helper of the first half on a goal by Matt Waibel that tied the score at six. The Devils managed one more before the break to take a 7-6 advantage into the locker room.

In the third quarter, FDU outscored the Aggies, 3-0, with a 6-4 advantage in shots on goal to go on top, 10-6 after three.

The Devils went up by five with the first goal of the fourth quarter, but the Aggies responded with three unanswered tallies in a span of 1:54. Smith set up three different teammates for goals in the spurt and DelVal looked poised for a comeback as it trailed, 11-9, with 8:13 still to play. DelVal controlled play for much of the fourth quarter and outshot the Devils, 12-6 (6-3 on goal), but it was FDU that scored the next two goals to close out the 13-9 road victory.

Smith finished with six assists in the game to break the programs previous single-game record set by senior P.J. Rafferty who had five on two occassions. Smith added one goal for a career-high seven points in the contest. Brasch, Napieralski, and Waibel each scored twice while Bryan Thompson was an impressive 22-for-25 on faceoffs with 13 ground balls and an assist. Orterro Felton caused four turnovers and grabbed three ground balls, and goalkeeper Gavin Yingling suffered his first loss of the year with four saves.

At the other end, Adam Reifer made 14 saves in the win and Bellanger finished with seven goals and one assist for a game-high eight points. Zane Johnston followed with one goal and five assists for six points and Michael Warg scored twice.

The Aggies will travel to take on MAC Freedom rival DeSales University at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
