Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Aggies Overcome In Thrilling, 25-24, Marathon Game Against Eastern

DOYLESTOWN (Pa.) – In a game that saw 16 ties and 11 lead changes, it was visiting Eastern University that scored last, with just 23 seconds left in regulation, to outlast host Delaware Valley University women's lacrosse, 25-24, in a Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom tussle.

The Eagles kept their playoff hopes alive as they pulled to 3-3 in conference play (4-9 overall) while the Aggies dropped to 2-4 in MAC Freedom games and 5-7 overall.

Eastern held the largest lead of the game as it scored four times in the first 3:25 of regulation to get out to an early 4-0 advantage.

DelVal responded with the next five goals in five and a half minutes to take its first lead, 5-4.

The Eagles countered with the next three tallies, but the Aggies were one better again as they used a four-goal spurt to jump back on top, 9-7, with 8:25 left in the first.

Eastern scored with less than two seconds left in the stanza to cap a 6-3 run over the final eight minutes and give the visiting team a 13-12 lead at the half.

DelVal recaptured the lead with two goals in the first 24 seconds of the second half, but the Eagles responded with two of their own separated by less than a minute to make it 15-14.

After Gabby Borst knotted the score at 15-15, the two teams went back and forth in a frantic pace and played to seven more deadlocks including the last at 24-24 apiece with 2:43 left in regulation.

Off the ensuing draw, the Aggies took possession but were forced into a turnover and Eastern went the other way. DelVal recovered in transition, but Allison Andres eventually found a cutting Mackenzie Dix for what proved to be the game-winning goal with 23 ticks left in regulation.

The Aggies still had a chance, but needed to win the draw control. They did, and Gamache raced towards the cage but was fouled with 10 seconds left. The foul occurred just outside the free-position area, and Gamache was swarmed by the Eagle defense. She got off a tough shot that rolled wide of the cage and Eastern celebrated the 25-24 triumph.

The 24 team goals scored by DelVal surpassed the single-game record of 22 and Gamache set new single-game high's with her 10 goals and one assist for 11 points. Fellow sophomore Jaden Keefer notched a career-high five goals, and junior Sabrina Butler recorded career-best six points on four goals and two assists. Borst, a freshman, netted her first career hat trick and classmate Shannon Petrillo scored her first collegiate goal early in the second half. Amanda McKeegan tallied twice before earning her second yellow card in the opening minutes of the second stanza and senior Courtney Knight found the back of the net for the third time this year.

Gamache added 11 draw controls, three ground balls, and two caused turnovers and Knight finished with three draw controls, three ground balls and a caused turnover. Seniors Amanda Wood and Aimee MacFarland were strong defensively as Wood finished with four ground balls and two caused turnovers and MacFarland also scooped four ground balls. Classmate Amanda Dietrich grabbed four ground balls of her own from the keeper position and made nine saves.

Eastern was led by seven goals, two assists and nine points by Meghan Kosmides who added a game-high 15 draw controls to go with four ground balls and two caused turnovers. Sabrina Campbell was impressive with eight goals and two assists for 10 points with three ground balls and Dix finished with three goals and one assist for four points including the game-winning tally.
