DOYLESTOWN (PA) – The Delaware Valley University baseball team hit two home runs in the bottom of the sixth to win the nightcap of a double-header against Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom rival Wilkes University. The Colonels took game one, 5-1, and the Aggies won game two, 4-1.
DelVal is now 12-20 overall and 7-11 in league play while Wilkes is 13-18 and 7-11.
In the opener, both teams went scoreless through the first two innings of play with just one hit a piece. Wilke's Jorge Gonzalez scored the first run of the day for either team in the top of the third. Gonzalez singled to center field, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, and then advanced home on a RBI single hit by Jack Fischer.
The Colonels added three additional runs over the next two innings. Matt Reinert scored on an RBI single from Vinny Bobbin in the fourth and Brandon Reno homered to left field for two more runs in the fifth to make the score 4-0.
DelVal scored their only run of the game in the sixth as Brown advanced from second to home on an error out in right field. Wilkes added one more run in the seventh to take game one of the doubleheader by a final score of 5-1.
Senior
Hunter Mease pitched a complete game, he allowed five runs on nine hits with three walks and four strikeouts, in the loss. Noah Durnin earned the win on the mound for Wilkes.
In game two, DelVal grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. After a single to left field,
Timmy Lallis advanced to second on a
Tom Crooks single, stole third, and scored on groundout to shortstop by
Troy Lachenmayer.
Both teams went scoreless and hitless in the second and third, but Wilkes knotted the game at one apiece in the top of the fourth, Nicholas Capozzi scored on a sacrifice fly. After another scoreless inning in the fifth, the Aggies erupted in the sixth.
Lachenmayer opened the sixth with his first career home run that bounced off the top of the fence and over to give the Aggies a huge momentum swing and a 2-1 lead. Then, with two outs and Hendricks on second,
Neal Flogel hit another home run to give DelVal a three run lead, 4-1.
The Aggies held the Colonels to just one hit in the final innings and no runs to come away with a 4-1 victory. DelVal won the season-series against Wilkes for the first time since 2012 and have their best conference record since finishing 8-13, also in 2012.
Brown allowed just one run on eight hits with one strikeout and no walks. JT Hibschman was given the loss having allowed four runs on seven hits in 5.2 innings.
Lallis, Lachenmayer, Hendricks, and Flogel all finished the game with one hit and one run. Lachenmayer and Flogel also had two RBI's.
The Aggies are now tied with Wilkes University for fifth place in the MAC Freedom.
DelVal travels to Radnor, PA to play a single non-conference game against the Cabrini University Cavaliers, Wednesday, April 24 at 3:30 p.m.
