DOYLESTOWN (Pa.) – A late surge and a career high seven points for
Ben Napieralski forced the game into overtime, but it was not enough as the Delaware Valley University men's lacrosse team dropped a Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom contest to visiting Wilkes University, 13-12.
The Aggies fell to 5-8 overall, 0-4 MAC Freedom, while the Colonels improved to 8-5 overall and 2-2 MAC Freedom. DelVal is now 1-2 all-time in games that could not be decided through regulation.
Wilkes scored the first two goals of the game, one from Alex Myers and one from Jack Moyer, in just under five minutes of play to take an early, 2-0, lead.
DelVal responded with two quick goals from junior
Khalil Lindsey and the freshman Napieralski to even the score, but the Colonels responded with two goals late in the first by Eric Ormsby and Connor Daly to make it 4-2 after one period of play.
The Aggies tied the game again with the first two goals of the second quarter. Lindsey potted his second of the day and
Dylan Brasch netted his first.
Wilkes broke the tie when O'Connell got his second and Kyle Sokol potted his lone goal of the day for their third two-goal lead of the day, 6-4.
Both teams traded goals the rest of the way as Andrew Moynihan's goal for the Colonels was sandwiched between two from Napieralski to send the Aggies to the half down, 7-6.
The Colonels came out strong in the second half and controlled the majority of the third quarter as they outscored the Aggies, 3-0, in the frame with two goals from Myers and one from Owen Grigas to make it 10-6 going into the fourth.
Napieralski scored again to open up the fourth, but things appeared bleak for the DelVal as Wilkes added to its lead with goals by Connor Daily and John Wink for the largest lead of the game, 12-7.
However, in the last nine minutes of regulation five different players scored a goal for the Aggies to complete the comeback. Napieralski scored another and dished out two assists for five goals and seven points on the day, Lindsey completed his hat trick, Brasch scored his second, and Waibel and Keller each scored one. Keller's goal tied the game with under a minute to play and
Gavin Yingling shut the door the rest of regulation to force overtime.
Less than four minutes into the extra session, Wilkes University's Ethan Weaver scored the golden goal in overtime, after hitting the post just seconds earlier, to end the game, 13-12.
Napieralski tied his career-high of five goals, set earlier this season, and scored a career best seven points. Lindsey's three goals were also a season-high while Yingling made 15 saves through regulation and overtime in the loss.
At the other end, Carter Whittemore made 10 saves in the win. Myers scored three goals and Connor Daily scored two, while Weaver finished the game with one goal and one assist.
The Aggies will travel to Purchase, NY, on Wednesday, April 17, to play Manhattanville College at 7 p.m. in another MAC Freedom contest.
