Baseball Drops Home Doubleheader To Manhattanville

DOYLESTOWN (PA) – The Delaware Valley University baseball team suffered two Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom losses against Manhattanville College at home on Saturday afternoon.

The Valiants won the first game, 13-4 before taking the nightcap, 14-1, to complete the three-game season series sweep. They improved to 9-8 overall and 6-2 in the conference while the Aggies fell to 6-14 with a 2-7 MAC Freedom mark.

The Manhattanville offense recorded 14 hits in the opener. After dropping into an early 4-0 hole, catcher Troy Lachenmayer got the Aggies on the board with a single to left field, bringing Timmy Lallis home for the Aggies only run scored through the five innings of play.

The Valiants put the game out-of-reach with seven additional runs scored in the following two innings to make the score 11-1.

In the bottom of the sixth, designated hitter Ryan Schuetrumpf decreased Manhattanville's lead by one with a home run to deep left field.

Both teams scored two additional runs in the final frame. Schuetrumpf and junior Matt Huber both doubled to left field for one RBI apiece in the ninth.

Junior Justin Proteau pitched over five innings for the win (4-1). He surrendered two runs on five hits while striking out seven. Junior Cody Brown (0-4), threw for five innings and surrendered one earned and five unearned runs on eight hits.

In the first inning of game two, the Valiants jumped out to a 5-0 lead. Delaware Valley tallied its first and only run in the sixth, but it was too little and too late for the Aggies as Manhattanville had already surmounted a 14-0 lead. Brown singled to shortstop for an RBI as right fielder Tom Crooks plated the only run of the game for the Aggies.

Junior shortstop Peter Iannarilli led the Valiants with three runs scored in both games and finished the doubleheader a combined 3-for-4 at the plate with six runs scored and four RBIs. Sophomore Jack Matero hit his second homerun in as many days and finished the doubleheader 5-for-7 with four runs scored and one RBI.

On the mound for Manhattanville, Luke Shaffer, (2-0), earned the victory having allowed the lone run on five hits with one walk and one strikeout. Freshman Zach Goodell dropped to 1-2 on the year.

This upcoming Wednesday, April 3, the Aggies travel to Gwynedd Mercy University to play the Griffins at 3:30 p.m.
