Baseball Overcome At Ursinus

COLLEGEVILLE (PA) – After a slow start for both teams, Ursinus College exploded in the middle innings en route to a, 14-3, victory over the visiting Delaware Valley University baseball team Wednesday afternoon.

The loss dropped the Aggies to 5-8 overall while the Bears improved to 6-5.

Ursinus opened the scoring in the bottom of the first after junior Alex Mumme hit his 14th career homer. Mumme's homer run was the Bears second hit of the game. Earlier in the inning, Florentino singled to first base but was caught stealing going to second.

DelVal out hit Ursinus in the second inning 1-0, but was unable to capitalize as Neal Flogel was left on second base when Tanner Moran grounded out to third base.

After another scoreless inning for the Aggies, Ursinus erupted for five runs on five hits with no errors. The inning was highlighted again by Mumme as he doubled to center field for two RBI's. The Bears continued to add to their lead in the fourth and fifth, building an insurmountable 13-0 lead headed into the top of the sixth.

DelVal finally broke the scoreless streak with three hits in the sixth, which was good for one run. Troy Lachenmayer scored on a double by Ryan Schuetrumpf to left field.

The Aggies held the Bears to just one run over their final three frames and added two runs on three hits in the eighth as Flogel and Josh Adamski both scored on a single up the middle by Zack Zgura.
Ursinus used a double play to end the game and take the 14-3 triumph.

DelVal totaled 11 hits in the game from nine different players, led by two apiece from Flogel and Matt DeLaRosa. Zgura was 1-for-1 off the bench with two RBIs.

Senior James Eldridge started the game and pitched three innings in the loss. Evan Thorpe and Ryan Georgiadis split the remainder of the game. Georgiadis pitched three frames of no-hit ball with two strikeouts and three walks. David Drea threw for six innings in the victory. Drea allowed one run on eight hits with two strikeouts and no walks.

DelVal returns to action this weekend with a three-game set against Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom foe as they travel to Center Valley to play DeSales University at 3:30 p.m. on Friday before hosting a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.
