(FORT PIERCE) Fl. – The Delaware Valley University baseball team split a doubleheader against Western Connecticut State University on Wednesday afternoon with a 5-2 win in the opener and a 5-3 setback in the second game.
The Aggies (2-6) opened up a 5-0 lead through the first five innings, and hung on for a 5-2 victory in game one.
Josh Adamski drove in Zackary Zgura with an RBI single in the first and Hendricks singled down the left line to plate
Timmy Lallis in the second.
Following a scoreless fourth, DelVal plated three runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Cody Brown started the scoring with an RBI single to score
Joey Lodato, who led off the frame with a single to the right side. Zgura followed with an infield single that knocked in
Tom Crooks and Lallis.
The Colonials (1-7) were held scoreless until the top half of the sixth inning when
Moe Ortiz-Echevarria doubled to left field to score
Kevin Smith and
Jake Babon. Babon reached on a one-out walk and Smith followed with his second hit of the game.
Zgura lead the team with two hits and also scored one run and picked up two RBI's. Six different players registered a hit for the Aggies and Lallis scored two runs.
In his first collegiate start, junior
Troy Lachenmayer pitched seven strong innings in the complete-game victory. Lachenmayer only allowed two runs on 10 hits, while throwing five strikeouts.
Mike Hendler also pitched a complete-game in the loss and allowed eight hits and five earned runs while walking four and striking out three. Eight different players registered a hit for Western Connecticut led by a pair of hits each for Smith and David Postorino.
In the back half of the double header, after going down 1-0 early in the game, Crooks hit a single to first base which brought Lallis home and knotted the score at one a piece.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Colonials regained the lead as they added three runs highlighted by Erik Merrill's double deep into right field that scored two.
The Aggies drew within a run as
Neal Flogel and
Joey Lodato each had RBI singles in the top half of the sixth inning.
Western Connecticut added an insurance run in the bottom of the frame when
Max Gregory scored on a wild pitch with two outs.
Michael Kolf earned the victory after he threw five innings with three earned runs on seven hits while striking out two and walking one.
Matt Fasoli registered the save after shutting down DelVal in the seventh inning, striking out two and walking one in the final inning of work.
James Eldridge took the loss after yielding four runs, three of them earned, on six hits. He struck out two and walked three for the Aggies in just over four innings. Brenden Giampa pitched the remainder of the game, allowed one run, walked two, and struck out one batter.
Ryan Schuetrumpf led the team at the plate with a 3-for-4 effort and one run scored, and Crooks was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a walk.
The Aggies get right back at it tomorrow, March 14, at 10 AM when they play North Park University in their final game of spring break.
