DOYLESTOWN (Pa.) – Despite dropping an 80-73 home contest to FDU-Florham on its home court on Saturday, the Delaware Valley University men's basketball team clinched a berth in the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom playoffs by virtue of a Misericordia University loss to DeSales.
The Aggies are at 12-11 overall and 8-4 in league play. They are currently tied with Wilkes University, one game behind Eastern University (DelVal swept Eastern this year), and two games behind DeSales. The
Aggies will face the Colonels at home on Tuesday and will play at the Bulldogs on Saturday to conclude the regular season.
DelVal held a 14-8 lead after 8:48 of action, but the Devils countered with 10 straight points in less than two minutes to take a four-point lead that they would not relinquish the rest of the day.
FDU-Florham closed the half with an 11-2 run to take a 38-26 lead into the break. It forced the Aggies into 11 turnovers in the first half and only gave the ball up four times itself.
The Devils led by as many as 17 points on three different occasions in the second stanza, including at 62-45 with 10:34 remaining.
DelVal go to within single-digits of the lead after a 13-5 spurt that made it 67-58 with six minutes on the clock, but FDU go its lead back to 14 points with under 1:30 left in regulation.
The Aggies made a charge at the end of the game and outscored the Devils 10-1 to make it 78-73 with nine ticks to play, but FDU held on for the seven-point victory.
Damian Washington and
Mike Cianciulli each finished with 19 points and Cianciulli hauled in five rebounds.
Lybrant Robinson followed with 17 points and seven boards while
Andre' Butler,
Alex Matsinye and
Damani Myers each scored six points. Matsinye led the team with eight rebounds and dished out three assists.
Andy Fleuantin led the Devils with a career-high 28 points to go with six assists and two steals. Anthony Mitchell followed with 18 points and four assists and Darren Davy chipped in with 11 points and five boards. Kenneth LaRocca came off the bench to score seven points.
DelVal is on to face two playoff teams next week beginning with Wilkes on Tuesday night at 8 p.m. While the four playoff teams are set, the seeding will not be settled until after next week's contests.
