Men's Hoops Celebrates Seniors, Drops Home Contest To Wilkes

DOYLESTOWN (Pa.) – The Delaware Valley University men' basketball team honored its four senior team captains before the game with a Senior Night ceremony, but it was visiting Wilkes University that came away with the 85-70 Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom victory.

Tonight was the final home regular season game in the careers of Ja'Don Robinson, Dom Stiefel, Alex Matsinye, and Andre' Butler. The four have been together all four years and have made the conference tournament three out of four times.

The Aggies currently sit at 12-12 overall and 8-5 in league play while the Colonels improved to 17-7 and 9-4. Both teams are locks for the conference tournament, but seeding is yet to be determined. DeSales secured the number one overall seed with a win over Eastern today, but the Eagles seed in the tournament is still undecided.

Stiefel got the game started with a trey and Damian Washington poured one in moments later to put DelVal on top 9-6. That is the last time the Aggies would lead the rest of the night.

Wilkes scored the next 13 points, behind eight points from Tommy Bowen, to take a 19-9 advantage. The lead ballooned to 14 with 9:21 left in the stanza, and while DelVal was able to pull within seven on two different occasions, it was the Colonels that maintained a 47-32 lead at the break.

Wilkes shot 45.9-percent from the field and 47.1-percent from deep in the first twenty minutes and Bowen had 11 points.

After Rob Pecorelli hit a trey to start the second, DelVal went on an 11-0 run, highlighted by three consecutive 3-pointers from Stiefel, to make it a 53-43 game with 15:51 still to play.

The Aggies still trailed by 10 with just under six minutes to play in regulation, but that's the closest they would get the rest of the way as the Colonels escaped Doylestown with the 85-70 triumph.

Butler led DelVal with 14 points and six rebounds to go with two assists, two steals, and two blocked shot. Stiefel was 4-for-10 from beyond the arc for 12 points and Matsinye and Washington each finished with 11 points. Matsinye added four boards and three assists while Washington grabbed three rebounds and added a blocked shot. Mike Cianciulli finished with nine points, five rebounds and three steals and Lybrant Robinson scored seven and dropped four dimes.

For Wilkes, Pecorelli dropped in 26 points on 5-of-8 shooting from deep and Bowen totaled 17 points and seven rebounds. Mark Mullins finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds and Marcus Robinson grabbed a game-high 11 boards to go with 10 points. Connor Evans dished out five assists and scored 11 points.
