Men's Hoops Falls At DeSales, Sets Up Rematch For MAC Freedom Postseason

CENTER VALLEY (Pa.) – The Delaware Valley University men's basketball team fell at Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom rival DeSales University, 73-61, on Saturday afternoon to set up a rematch in the first round of the conference postseason tournament on Wednesday night at 8 p.m.

The Aggies finished the regular season on a three-game skid and a 12-13 mark overall. They earned the fourth-seed in this year's MAC Freedom playoffs, with an 8-6 mark in league play, and will have to travel back to Center Valley to take on the number-one seed Bulldogs (19-6, 12-2 MAC Freedom), who they dropped two regular season games to this year, including today. Wilkes University (9-5) earned the two-seed by virtue of a tie-breaker and will host three-seed Eastern University (9-5).

DelVal started the game on a 10-4 run thanks to treys from Andre' Butler and Mike Cianciulli. DeSales came back to tie the game at 12-12 and it was deadlocked four more times after that until the Bulldogs used a 7-1 spurt to go ahead by six.

They maintained the six-point lead into the break, 36-30. DeSales shot 51.7-percent from the field and 36.3-percent from three compared to 44-percent and 37.5-percent efforts from the Aggies.

The Bulldogs used a 6-2 run to start the second to grow their advantage to double-digits, 42-32.

DelVal countered with a 10-0 run over the next 3:30 of play to knot the game again. Alex Matsinye had five points in that stretch including a 3-pointer and a steal that sparked the run.

Later in the game, the Aggies trailed by five before a Lybrant Robinson trey made it a 55-53 game with 8:17 on the clock.

From there, the Bulldogs used a 13-4 run to take a 68-57 lead with under three to play, and put the game away.

Matsinye led DelVal with 17 points to go with five rebounds and three steals and Cinaciulli followed with 13 points and five boards. Robinson and Damani Myers each finished with eight points while Myers also racked up seven assists and six boards. Butler finished with seven rebounds, six points, three assists, and two blocked shots.

Timmy Edwards shined for DeSales with 24 points on 11-of-12 shooting from the field off the bench to go with four rebounds. Luke Connaghan finished with 13 points and five boards and Matt Kachelries and Tracy Simsick each totaled seven points. The Bulldogs got 36 points off their bench in the victory.
