FREDERICK (Md.) -- The Delaware Valley University men's basketball team never trailed through 39 minutes, 52 seconds of action until Hood College senior Michael Riley scooped a layup home from the post with eight ticks remaining for what proved to be the difference in the 92-90 non-conference decision.
The Aggies dropped to 2-3 overall as they lose their second game of the early going on a late bucket by the opposition. Hood was picked to finish first in the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Commonwealth and remained undefeated thus far as it improved to 7-0.
Delaware Valley led by 12, 29-17, midway through the first half as
Mike Cianciulli and
Devin Hill each had a pair of three's and eight points apiece. Each side made runs the rest of the half and the Aggies maintained a 10-point margin at the break, 49-39.
Damian Washington had 11 points over the final seven minutes of the stanza to match Cianciulli's high team-mark to that point.
As a team the Aggies shot 67.9% (19-for-28) from the field and hit 5-of-11 from beyond the arc while holding the Blazers to 13-of-33 (39.4%) from the field and 5-for-18 from deep in the first half. Turnovers were 11-5 in favor of the home team, but it was DelVal that held the 10-point advantage going into the second.
Hood used an 11-3 run to start the second half to close the gap to five, but the Aggies responded with an 11-4 spurt of their own to jump back out to a 66-54 lead with 14:20 still to play.
DelVal maintained a double-digit lead with eight minutes left, 80-70. The rest of the way, the Blazers outscored the visitors 22-10 and forced five turnovers including a crucial shot clock violation with under 90 seconds remaining and the Aggies up by one, 90-89. Edward Jones dumped a pass off inside to Washington under the basket and he appeared to get the shot off as the 30 second clock was expiring, but the officials whistled the shot clock violation and Hood took over.
The Blazers went down the other end and had two looks to take the lead, but Washington came down with a big rebound to give the ball back to DelVal with under a minute to play and still a one point lead. Cianciulli got open for a good look at a deep trey, but the shot caught iron and went out of bounds. Hood needed one basket to take the lead with under 10 seconds to play and it went inside to Riley who made a nice post move and scooped a layup in for Hood's first lead of the game, 91-90 with just eight seconds left.
The Aggies tried to stretch the court with a long pass, threw the ball away but committed their 24th turnover of the game and Hood got the ball back. DelVal quickly fouled and the Blazers made one of two take a 92-90 lead with three seconds still on the clock.
Jordan Tucker had a good look at a three-pointer at the buzzer but came up short and the home team held on for the two-point win.
DelVal shot over 60-percent from the field, over 50-percent from three, and a perfect 9-for-9 from the line as a team. It held Hood to 45.6% from the field and 31% from deep, but the Blazers attempted 25 free throws in the game and converted 21. The Aggies also won the board battle, 35-21, but turnovers were critical as DelVal committed 24 to Hood's six and the Blazers had 33 points off turnovers.
Cianciulli hit six treys for 20 points in the game and Washington notched a double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds to go with six assists. Hill was 5-for-9 from deep for 17 points and Tucker followed with 13 points to go with seven boards.
