Field Hockey Drops Nailbiter To Undefeated Widener

DOYLESTOWN (Pa.) --  The Delaware Valley University field hockey team hosted Widener University Tuesday night in a non-conference match, but it was the Pride that escaped with a 3-2 win, in a thriller.

Widener remained perfect, improving to 12-0 overall, while the Aggies dropped to 4-8.

The Aggies capitalized on thier first corner opportunity of the game, less than nine minutes into regulation as Gillian Nardelli sent a pass in to Jess Dixon who one-timed a shot into the back of the cage for her fifth tally of the season.

DelVal hung onto the 1-0 lead through the first two quarters thanks to strong defensive play and several key saves by senior Kita Konerth. Widener's best chance of the first half came late in the second quarter as Lexie Eberly was awarded a penalty stroke, but fired the ball just wide of the lower left corner. The Pride managed to put four shots on goal to DelVal's one through the first half and had seven of the initial 10 corner opportunities.

Six minutes into the third, Merdedith Benson put Widener on the board as she buried a rebound in front of the net, tying the score at 1-1. The Aggies regained the lead with just 12 seconds remaining in the quarter off another corner play. Ali Aguilar played the corner in to Nardelli who threw a shot towards the goal that ricocheted off of a Widener defender before finding the back of the net for a 2-1 lead. Nardelli was credited with her fourth goal of the season.

Early in the fourth, Widener's leading goal scorer Jackie Daniels capitalized on a turnover and tied the game at two apiece. Nine minutes later, Margaret Howe-Consiglio cashed in the game-winning tally after she pounced on a ball amongst a scramble in front of the cage and tucked it home for the 3-2 lead. The Aggies had one final chance to tie the game as they were awarded a corner with under a minute to play, but could not manage to get a shot off as Widener maintained its undefeated season.

Both teams had three shots on goal in the final half, and the Pride had six of the final 10 corners.

Nardelli led the team with one goal and one assist for three points. For DelVal, Kita Konerth made six saves.

DelVal will play at home again this Friday, October 11, for Senior Night as they host MAC Freedom rival DeSales University at 7 P.M.
