Field Hockey Celebrates Seniors, Drops Heartbreaker To DeSales

DOYLESTOWN (PA) – The Delaware Valley University field hockey team celebrated its seven seniors on homecoming Friday, but dropped a 3-2 heartbreaker to visiting Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom rival DeSales University.

The Aggies (4-9, 0-3 MAC Freedom) honored Alexa Aguilar, Rosie Bishop, Samantha Collyer, Madi Colon, Mackenzie Harper, Megan Kleinfelter, and Kita Konerth as the seven seniors played their last game under the lights at Robert A. Lipinski field and have just one home contest remaining in their careers.

The Bulldogs (7-7 overall, 2-1 MAC Freedom) controlled the pace of play for most of the first half and held a 13-1 edge in shots on goal and 4-0 edge in corner opportunities after 25 minutes of play. DelVal's defense limited the quality chances and Bishop stopped everything that came her way to keep it a scoreless to that point.

The Aggies earned their first corner with 4:17 left in the first half and they made it count. Aguilar played the ball in to Gillian Nardelli who let a hard shot go that was stopped by a defender and bounced right to TJ Smith who ripped one on goal and it found the back of the cage to give the home team the 1-0 lead at the break.

DelVal came out strong in the second half and had the first three shots on cage and two corner opportunities. It cashed in on its second corner and doubled its lead with a perfectly executed play. Nardelli played the ball in to Aguilar who dished to Jess Dixon and she let a shot go from the top of the arch. Collyer was crossing in front of the cage and got a stick on the ball to deflect it passed the keeper and into the cage for the 2-0 lead.

DeSales answered less than three minutes later on a corner play of its own to get it back to a one-goal game. Olivia Witmer played the ball in to Madison Brader who put a shot on that Leah Echard pounced on and poked home to make it 2-1. It remained that way going into the fourth.

The Bulldogs tied the game at two apiece with six minutes left in regulation when Hannah Williams slid a pass across to Witmer who patiently lifted one over the diving keeper. With less than two minutes remaining, DeSales earned a corner opportunity and a shot ricocheted off a DelVal defender and right onto the stick of Witmer who blasted one through the legs of the Aggies' keeper and into the cage for the game-winning, 3-2, tally.

DelVal finished with six shots on goal and five corner chances while the Bulldogs put 21 shots on cage and had 14 corners. Bishop was stellar in goal and made 17 saves while Sadie Strober also kept one out of the cage.
