Field Hockey Drops Tough OT Game At Stevens

HOBOKEN (Nj.) – The Delaware Valley University field hockey team traveled fought hard to tie the game late in regulation, but fell in the first overtime to host Stevens Technical Institute, 2-1, in a Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom battle.

It was the first time the Aggies (4-7, 0-2 MAC Freedom) met the Ducks (8-3, 1-1 MAC Freedom) in a league match as Stevens just entered the MAC Freedom prior to this season.

Senior goal keeper Rosie Bishop made six saves in the first quarter to keep it scoreless after the first 15 minutes of play. DelVal had the only two shots on goal in the second quarter, but could not crack the scoreboard as the game went to halftime knotted at 0-0. Stevens held a slim 3-2 edge in corner opportunities through the first 30 minutes.

The Ducks had eight shots on goal in the third, but Bishop was equal to the task on every occasion to keep the game scoreless going into the fourth. Stevens had four corners in the third compared to one for the Aggies.

Stevens broke the tie 3:27 into the fourth quarter as Jaymie Fiebel deflected an Alyssa Appleby shot into the cage for her fourth tally of the season and a 1-0 lead.

With under two minutes to play, junior Samantha Collyer tied the game for DelVal with her third goal of the season to send the game to overtime, 1-1.

The Aggies pressured early in the overtime and had two shots before earning a corner opportunity, but could not prevail.

DelVal's Gillian Nardelli was issued a green card with 3:10 left in the first overtime. The Ducks capitalized at the end of the extra-man opportunity as Anna Cooper scored her first of the season to give the home team the 2-1 overtime win.

Bishop was stellar in goal as she saved 16 of 18 shots. Stevens held a 17-7 edge in corners and its keeper, Emily Franco, made three saves.

DelVal will return home to take on the Widener Pride on Friday night before homecoming at 7 p.m.
