Field Hockey Falls At Home To Conference Front Runner FDU

DOYLESTOWN (PA) – The Delaware Valley University field hockey team let up a goal in the waning seconds of the first half that proved to be the difference in the game as visiting FDU-Florham remained perfect in Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom play with a 3-1 victory.

The Devils improved to 14-2 overall and 5-0 in league games while the Aggies fell to 5-10 and 1-4.

FDU-Florham got on the board first as it earned a corner play three minutes into the game and eventually Marissa Colvin gathered the ball from 10 yards out and snuck one into the bottom of the cage.

DelVal countered nicely and knotted the game at 1-1just 1:51 later. The Aggies applied pressure and Gillian Nardelli through a pace to the front of the net and Samantha Collyer gathered and deposited her sixth of the season.

Both teams were stifled by strong defensive play through much of the second quarter until the Devils finally earned a corner with under a minute left in the half. Off the set play, the ball came to the conference's leading goal scorer Haleigh Flukey and she made no mistake in converting her 22nd tally of the season for the 2-1 FDU lead going into the break.

The Aggies had a golden chance to tie the game in the third quarter as Jess Dixon drove the near post, cut back to the middle, but her shot toward the wide open cage missed left. Down the other end, the Devils pressured with two corners and four shots on goal but keeper Rosie Bishop, with help from a defensive save by Mackenzie Harper, kept it a one-goal game.

FDU controlled play for much of the fourth quarter and registered nine shots, seven on goal, and six corners. Late in the stanza, Flukely got her second of the day as she dribbled through the defense and banged on home from in tight for the 3-1 final.

DelVal has just two more regular season games on the schedule. Both remaining games are road MAC Freedom contests beginning with Wilkes University on Saturday at 1 p.m.
