WILKES-BARRE (Pa.) – The Delaware Valley University field hockey team held a 1-0 halftime lead, but surrendered two second half goals to fall to host Wilkes University, 2-1, in a Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom contest.
The Aggies (5-11, 1-5 MAC Freedom) got the first tally just eight minutes into the game when
Samantha Collyer scored a beautiful goal as she spun around and deflected a pass into the cage for her seventh of the season.
Each team had two shots on goal in the first half as DelVal maintained the one-goal advantage into the second.
Early in the third quarter, the Colonels (10-8, 3-3 MAC Freedom) were awarded a penalty stroke and Zoe Stephanski converted for her third tally of the year to knot the score, 1-1.
The game remained deadlocked into the final stanza. Wilkes outshot the Aggies, 5-3 in the fourth quarter, but more importantly it scored the lone goal of the stanza with 10:23 left in regulation. Off a corner play, Maddie Kelley stopped the pass and Ali Dunn blasted it home for what would prove to be the game-winning goal.
DelVal finished with seven shots in the game led by two apiece from Collyer,
Jess Dixon, and
Gillian Nardelli.
Kita Konerth went the distance between the pipes and made five saves.
The Aggies will conclude the 2019 campaign on Wednesday at Eastern, at 3:30 p.m.
