Volleyball Falls In Four Sets At FDU-Florham

MADISON (Nj.) -- The Delaware Valley University volleybll team battled Middle atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom foe FDU-Florham through four sets on Tuesday night, but fell to the host Devils, 3-1. Set scores were 25-21, 20-25, 25-17, and 26-24 .

The Aggies (5-17, 0-6 MAC Freedom) held a 7-4 lead in the first set after six straight points including four service aces by Laura Sweger. FDU-Florham (8-13, 1-5 MAC Freedom) battled back to tie the game multiple times including at 15-15 later in the game, and again at 18-18. DelVal went up by two at 20-18, and maintained the lead at 21-20 before the Devils scored five straight points to take the 1-0 lead in the match. 

In the second set, the Aggies held an early 12-5 lead as Sweger and Krista Hiller combined for eight of the points. They never trailed the rest of the match and held on for their first set win in conference play, 25-20. DelVal had 16 kills and just five errors in the set compared to nine kills and five errors for FDU. 

The Devils led by as many as 10 in the third set, 15-5. DelVal committed just three errors and had 10 kills, but could never capture the lead as it cut the deficit to six on two occasions, but FDU held on for the 25-17 win. 

The fourth set was a nail-biter that saw the Aggies trail by as many as 10 at 10-5, but they battled back with a 12-7 run to tie the game at 17-17, and continued its run to take a 19-17 lead. The two squads went back-and-forth until the game was tied at 24-24 and the winner would need to win by two points. The home team wasted no time, as it scored two fast points on kills from Nathalia Padron to earn the MAC Freedom match victory, 3-1. 

Sweger finished with 13 kills, five aces, and four blocks to pace DelVal and Caitlin Nemil led the way with 36 assists and 17 digs. Hiller added 12 kills and an ace and Reilly Greene followed with 9 kills to go with four blocks. Jess Ellick also had 17 digs from her libero position. 

Padron had a match-high 26 kills and Kacie Ros dished out 46 assists to go with 22 digs for the Devils. 

DelVal will be home for senior night on Thursday against Cheyney University at 7 p.m.
