Nardelli Lifts Field Hockey To MAC Freedom Victory At King's

WILKES-BARRE (Pa.) -- The Delaware Valley University field hockey team earned its first Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom victory of the season in come-from-behind fashion with two second half goals at King's College to take the victory, 2-1.

The Aggies and the Monarchs are now tied in the league standings at 1-3 while DelVal improved to 5-9 overall and King's fell to 5-10.

The Aggies earned the first corner of the game and got a shot on goal in the first four minutes, but it was the Monarchs that got on the board first. On its third corner of the game, King's played the ball into Jolee Tressler who set it up for Sara Whitesell and she blasted it into the back of the cage for the 1-0 lead with 44 seconds left in the first.

The Monarchs had five shots on goal and four corners in the second while holding the Aggies to just one shot. DelVal keeper Rosie Bishop stopped all shots thrown her way to keep it a one-goal game at the half.

In the third quarter, it was the Aggies that held a 3-0 advantage in shots, but still trailed, 1-0, going into the fourth quarter.

Just 52 seconds into the final stanza, DelVal earned a corner and ripped a flury of shots before Samantha Collyer gathered her own rebound near the side of the cage and banked a shot off a King's defender, and in, to tie the score, 1-1.

The game remained tied with less than five minutes to play in regulation when the Aggies worked the ball down the field and into Monarchs' territory. Madi Colon, T.J. Smith, and Collyer all touched the ball before it slid behind the keeper and Gillian Nardelli dove to poke it in the cage for the game-winning goal.  DelVal did not allow another shot the rest of the way and went home with the 2-1 win.

Collyer and Nardelli both notched their fifth goals of the season and Bishop earned her fourth win seven saves and one goal allowed.

Brianne Maluda finished with three saves for King's and Bailey Jordan led the squad with three shots on goal.

The Aggies have three games remaining, all league games, beginning with FDU-Florahm at home on Wednesday, October 23 at 4 p.m.
