WILKES-BARRE (Pa.) – The Delaware Valley University men's basketball team exploded for a season-high 99 points en route to a nine-point Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom victory on the road at Wilkes University on Wednesday night.
The Aggies improved to 9-9 overall and 5-2 in league play while the Colonels dropped 12-6 and 4-3.
DelVal was down early, but went on an 11-0 run to take an 18-11 lead with 13:53 on the clock.
Damian Washington led the charge with six points in that spurt.
Wilkes cut its deficit to one-point, 27-26, with 7:39 left in the half, before the Aggies made another run. A 14-4 run spurt, capped by a corner trey from
Lybrant Robinson, gave DelVal its largest lead of the game at 41-30. It continued the strong play to take a 45-34 lead into the locker room.
The Aggies shot 18-of-34 (52.9%) from the field and 4-for-12 (33.3%) from 3-point land through the first 20 minutes, and Wilkes was 15-of-32 (46.9%) from the field and 2-for-8 (25%) from beyond the arc.
DelVal came out in the second half and went 3-for-3 from deep and Washington added an old-fashioned 3-point play to extend the lead to 57-42 less than five minutes into the stanza.
Wilkes got to within seven after Marcus Robinson connected on a four-point play to make it 72-63. The Aggies got a jumper at the other end from Robinson, but the Colonels' Robinson connected from behind the arc again to cut the deficit to just six, 72-66, with 8:18 left in regulation.
DelVal scored the next five points, including an and-1 conversion by
Alex Matsinye, to go back up by 11, but Wilkes fired right back with a 5-0 run of its own to get it back to a six-point game, with just over six minutes to play.
The Colonels got to within four with just over two minutes remaining, but the Aggies closed the game with an 11-6 run to close out its third straight league victory.
Washington finished with a game and career-high 26 points to go with five rebounds. Robinson also notched a career-high with 22 points and added five boards on 3-of-5 shooting from 3-point land. Cianciulli followed up his 27-point performance from Saturday with a 19 point effort. Matsinye and
Damani Myers sparked the Aggies in the first half and finished the game with a combined 23 points and seven assist. DelVal shot a remarkable 36-for-63 (57.1%) from the field and 7-for-17 (41.2%) from behind the arc.
Wilkes was led by Mark Mullins 24 points and Rob Pecorelli's 23 points and each grabbed seven boards. Robinson finished with 17 points and Tommy Bowen followed with 15. As a team, the Colonels shot 33-of-67 (53.7%) from the field and 6-for-20 (30%) from deep.
The Aggies will be in Purchase, NY to take on the Manhattanville College Valiants on Saturday at 3 p.m.
