DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Gwynedd Mercy University went over the .500 mark for the season thanks to a 3-0, non-conference victory over host Delaware Valley University on Tuesday. Set scores were 25-19, 25-22 and 25-20.
The Griffins improved to 8-7 while the Aggies fell to 3-7.
Gwynedd Mercy jumped out to an 11-4 advantage in the opening set and never held a lead less than four points the rest of the way. The second was a battle that saw DelVal win five straight points, including consecutive aces by
Taylor Purner, to rally to an 18-17 lead. The set was even at 21-21 before the Griffins won four of the final five points.
In the third set, DelVal took a 15-14 advantage on a kill by Purner. However, Gwynedd Mercy went on an 8-1 run and closed the match out shortly after. The Griffins had a 31-28 advantage in kills and 9-4 in aces while the Aggies had the lone three blocks of the match.
Kayla Bracken led DelVal with nine kills and also added 12 digs and two service aces.
Danielle McKelvey followed with five kills and had team-highs of 20 digs and 12 assists. Purner finished with five kills, eight digs and nine assists.
Tara Moffa dug out 18 balls in the loss.
For Gwynedd Mercy, Madelyn Mosser led a balanced attack with eight kills. Bridget McTamney dished out 22 assists and had 22 digs while Cait Saaalfrank had a match-high 29 digs.
The Aggies will travel to Wilkes University for a Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom match on Wednesday, September 26 (7 p.m.).
