MADISON (NJ) – The Delaware Valley University field hockey team got back to its winning ways with a 2-1 non-conference victory over host Drew University on Saturday afternoon.
The Aggies improved their record to 4-1 on the season while the Rangers dropped to 1-5.
Eleven minutes into the game, Drew earned three consecutive corner opportunities and cashed in on the final one. Mackenzie Hascup got a shot on goal that was saved, but the rebound came right to Carly Schiller who deposited the ball into the cage for a 1-0 lead.
DelVal responded seven minutes later with a corner play of its own.
Alexa Aguilar took the corner and
Madi Colon found a loose ball in front and put it home for her third goal of the season and a 1-1 game.
Each team had just one shot on goal in the first 35 minutes of action and the two teams went into the break deadlocked at one.
Seven minutes into the second half, the Aggies had a golden opportunity to take the lead by
Gillian Nardelli's shot rang off the post and stayed out. However, 14 minutes later, DelVal broke through as Courtney
Austin found the back of the cage with a low shot to the left side for a 2-1 lead with just over 14 minutes left in regulation.
The Aggie defense held the Rangers without a shot the rest of the way and came away with the one-goal victory.
Rosie Bishop earned the win and made one save in the effort as DelVal outshot Drew, 4-2, and had six corners to the Rangers' five. For Drew, Ryann Callaghan made two saves in goal.
The Aggies will return home to take on Immaculata University on Tuesday, September 18 at 4 p.m.
