HARRISONBURG (VA) – Delaware Valley University split a pair of matches on the final day of competition at the Route 42 Classic. The Aggies fell 3-1 to host Eastern Mennonite University but bounced back with a 3-0 sweep of Mary Baldwin College.
DelVal is now 1-2 on the young season.
In the match against Eastern Mennonite University, the Aggies had a strong second set and evened the match with a 25-19 victory. However, Eastern Mennonite pulled away in the final two sets, 25-11 and 25-13.
DelVal had 23 kills in the contest, but hurt itself with 27 hitting errors.
Kayla Bracken paced the Aggies once again as she had nine kills in the morning while also adding six digs.
Laura Sweger notched six kills and just one error in 13 attacks.
Alexis Sideris added four kills and 10 digs and
Danielle Marin dug out 16 balls.
Danielle McKelvey dished out 11 assists and had nine digs as well.
Maria Yoder and Beck Hoskins led Eastern Mennonite with eight and seven kills respectively.
Against Mary Baldwin, DelVal was down 6-5 in the first set but ran off five straight points and won 25-21. The Aggies were then up just one, 19-18, in the second when they ended the set with six straight points. In the third, DelVal found itself down by scores of 10-4, 11-7 and 18-9. The team was still down 20-17 when they notched eight of the final 10 points to complete the sweep with a 25-22 score.
The Aggies had 33 kills and 14 aces in the win. Sweger had one of the best single-match kill percentages in school history as she had 12 kills and no errors in 16 attempts (.750). Sideris totaled six kills, 12 digs and four service aces while McKelvey added six kills, 16 assists and 18 digs.
Kourtney Campbell had five kills in the match and
Taylor Purner notched eight digs, seven assists and five service aces were three of her ace coming down the stretch in the third set. Marin and
Jess Holster combined for 31 digs in the win.
DelVal will travel to Penn State Berks for a non-conference match on Wednesday, September 5 (7 p.m.)
