DOYLESTOWN (PA) – The Delaware Valley University women's soccer team opened the book on its 2018 campaign at home against Penn State – Harrisburg on Friday night, but it was the Lions that left with the 2-0 victory.
Less than five minutes into the game, the Aggies committed a foul just outside of their box and gave Penn State a direct kick opportunity. Kaeleigh Smedley stepped up to take the kick and curved one around the wall of defenders and it ricocheted off the near post and into the net to put the Lions up 1-0.
Penn State outshot DelVal 8-1 in the first half, but
Haley Young made two big saves, including a diving stop on a ball labeled for the bottom right corner, to keep it a one-goal game at the half.
Young was called upon to make two more saves to start the second half before the Aggies offense applied some pressure. They earned two corner kicks and had shots from in close on each, but one was denied by Penn State keeper Kayla Arnold and the other rang off the crossbar.
The Lions' sealed the victory in the 84
th minute when Michaela Lowery set up Elizabeth Clippinger who deposited one to the top right corner from 20 yards out and the 2-0 victory.
DelVal outshot Penn State 5-3 in the second half with each team registering two on goal. Young made four saves while Arnold recorded two in the win.
The Aggies will return to action next Wednesday, September 5 when they host Gwynedd Mercy College at 7 p.m.
