DelVal Baseball Holds On For 6-5 Thriller Over DeSales

DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Delaware Valley University knocked visiting DeSales University out of sole possession of first place in the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom as the Aggies built a 6-3 lead and held on at the end for a 6-5 victory.

DelVal improved to 9-18 overall and 4-11 in the conference. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs had their five-game winning streak snapped as they dropped to 21-13 overall and 14-4 in the MAC Freedom. They are now tied with defending champion Misericordia University atop the standings with three conference games remaining.

The Aggies took a 1-0 lead in the second when Luke Hendricks smashed a pitch off the scoreboard beyond the left field fence for his second home run of the season. DeSales responded with two run in the third and another tally in the top of the fifth for a 3-1 advantage.

Back came DelVal in its half of the fifth as Timmy Lallis reached base with a one-out single and eventually scored on a ground out by Ryan Schuetrumpf.

Then in the sixth inning, the Aggies took advantage of a two-out error by the Bulldogs that allowed two runs to score to tie the game. With the inning still alive, Tom Crooks followed with a triple that brought home Lallis for a lead that they never relinquished.

DeSales did not go quietly however as an RBI single by Nick White in the seventh made it a 6-4 ballgame. In the eighth, the Bulldogs brought the tying run to the plate, Hunter Mease came out of the bullpen to record a strikeout to end the stanza.

In the ninth, two walks and an infield hit loaded the bases for DeSales with nobody. Ben Lippincott, who entered the game after the first walk got a strikeout before a deep sacrifice fly to center by pinch-hitter Sean Hanczaryk made it 6-5 and the other runners moved to second and third. Lippincott took on pinch-hitter Michael White and got him swinging for the strikeout and the save in the 6-5 win.

Hendricks went 3-for-4 with a double, home run and two RBIs. Lallis went 2-for-5 and scored two runs. Kevin Crill picked up the win as he went seven-plus innings and allowed four runs and six hits while striking out five.

Nick White was 2-for-4 with three RBIs for the Bulldogs. Ryan Passaro took the loss in relief.

DelVal will open a three-game series with MAC Freedom foe King's College this weekend, starting with a nine-inning single game in Wilkes-Barre on Friday.
