DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Delaware Valley University scored 12 unanswered goals while keeping Calvin College off the scoreboard for a stretch of more than 35 minutes as the Aggies registered a 16-9, non-conference victory.
The win was the first for DelVal this season as the team improved to 1-4. The Knights, who are from Michigan and beginning their Spring Break trip to the Philadelphia area, fell to 2-5.
Calvin took a 3-2 lead with 4:21 left in the first quarter as Noah Nedd connected off a feed from Kyle Post. From that point on, it was all Aggies, starting just 85 seconds when
Jordan Smith scored his third goal of the game.
Khalil Lindsey then gave DelVal the lead for good with just five seconds left in the quarter off a pass from
Dylan Brasch.
The Aggies connected for four goals in the second quarter as they took an 8-3 advantage into the intermission.
Matt Brady started the quarter off a
Jerad Wilson assists.
Chris Coyle notched two goals in a 63-second span, the second coming off a great look from
PJ Rafferty. Rafferty later fed
Dylan Brasch for a tally with 2:03 to go before the half.
The DelVal run continued through the 15-minute, third quarter as five goals made it a 13-3 contest.
Matt Waibel got his first of the game off a Joran Smith assist while Lindsey followed with an unassisted tally. Smith got his second assist and fifth point of the game on a goal by Brasch. Coyle found the net for a third time followed by Lindsey off a Brasch helper.
DelVal went to its bench in the fourth and freshmen
Brandon Keller scored his first collegiate goal 46 seconds in. The Knights ended their 35-minute, 21-second drought when Nedd had an unassisted goal with 14 minutes remaining.
Freshmen
Alex Gundersen scored his first collegiate goal for the Aggies shortly after. Following a Calvin goal, Linsday got his fourth of the afternoon while Rafferty tied his own school single-game record with his fifth assist. The Knights notched the final three goals for the 16-9 final.
DelVal dominated the statistical categories as it held a 56-20 advantage in shots and committed just 12 turnovers, compared to 28 by Calvin. The Aggies were 12-for-14 in clear opportunities while they forced the Knights into a 12-for-24 effort.
Smith had three goals and two assists for a five-point effort. Rafferty's assists gave him five points on the day as well while Lindsey had four goals and four points. Brasch (2 goals, 2 assists) netted four points while Coyle had a three-goal showing.
Bryan Thompson was dominant on faceoffs as he won 10 of 14 draws and also added seven ground balls.
Orterro Felton finished with four ground balls and three caused turnovers while Wilson was scooped up four ground balls as well.
Nic Brown and
Zach Winfield combined for five saves in the win.
For Calvin, Nedd and Austin Bontreger scored two goals apiece with Nedd adding seven ground balls. Michael Winkler had a goal and two assists. Mitchell Wong stopped 19 shots in net.
DelVal will travel to Albright College for a non-conference game on Wednesday, March 21 (4 p.m.).
