FORT PIERCE (FL) – It was a quite a collegiate debut as a starter for Delaware Valley University pitcher
Cal Endy as he struck out 13 batters in a 5-1, game one victory over Hilbert College in Florida. The Hawks came back with an 11-5 triumph in the nightcap for the split.
The Aggies moved their record to 2-4 while the split left Hilbert with a 3-9 mark.
Endy, a 6-foot-3, 192-pound right-hander, went six-plus innings and allowed just one run and five hits. He also missed the school's single-game strikeout record by just four K's. He fanned the first four batters he faced and six of the first seven.
Meanwhile, DelVal gave Endy some offensive support thanks to two runs in the first and one in the second.
Ben Lippincott had RBI singles in each inning. The Aggies then made it 5-0 in the fifth thanks to a sacrifice fly by
Luke Hendricks and a run-scoring triple from
Ryan Schuetrumpf.
Endy got into some trouble in the seventh, but Brenden Giampa came in to get the final out and a save.
In the nightcap, Hilbert score once in the first, three in the second for a 4-0 lead. The Aggies scored five times in the top of the third, including another RBI by Lippincott, but the Hawks responded with four runs in their half of third and added three more in the fourth for the 11-5 win.
Kevin Crill suffered the loss.
DelVal will meet Western Connecticut State for a doubleheader in Florida on Wednesday, March 14.
