Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

DelVal Women's Lacrosse Takes Home Second Straight With 18-17 Win Over Gwynedd Mercy

DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Delaware Valley University scored two goals in a 30-second span late in the game and then held on for an 18-17, non-conference triumph over visiting Gwynedd Mercy University.

The Aggies, who also had a one-goal win with their 16-15 overtime victory over Keystone College on Saturday, improved to 2-0 on the young season. The Griffins slipped to 1-2.

Gwynedd Mercy's Victoria Braeunle scored on a pair of free position shots, the latter coming with just 4:30 left, to tie the game at 16-16.

Nearly two minutes later, DelVal senior and two-time all-conference honoree Kara Imes took a beautiful feed right in front of the net from freshman Claire Gamache and she beat goalkeeper Nicole Wood to put the Aggies up for good. Imes then won the ensuing draw control and Amanda McKeegan drew a free position attempt. She connected on the shot for a two-goal advantage with just 2:16 left.

The Griffins made things interesting when Braeunle scored her sixth goal of the contest with 58 seconds on the clock. They then won the draw control, but turned the ball over with 22 ticks left. DelVal wound up giving the ball back to Gwynedd-Mercy 12 seconds later, but the Griffins were unable to get a shot off before time expired.

The Aggies opened the game with three goals from three different players. However, Gwynedd Mercy notched four of the next six tallies to tie it up. The team went back and forth with the Griffins eventually taking a 9-8 advantage into halftime.

DelVal still trailed by one, 13-12, near the midway point of the second stanza when it scored three straight goals in a 64-second span to get back on top. Imes and Gamache notched goals during the spurt with a Taylor Teliszewski tally sandwiched in-between. The teams then traded goals, leaving the Aggies with a 16-14 advantage. That set up the late-game dramatics and the DelVal victory.

The Aggies set a program record by firing off 50 shots in the game. They held a 32-29 advantage in ground balls and just 15 turnovers compared to 23 by Gwynedd Mercy. McKeegan led the team with six points thanks to four goals and two assists. Teliszewski finished with five goals and five ground balls while Gamache also had five points (three goals, two assists) to go along with four ground balls and three caused turnovers. Imes' totals included four goals, eight draw controls and three ground balls. Alex Bukeavich caused three turnovers and scooped up six ground balls. Amanda Dietrich stopped 16 shots in net.

Braeunle added an assist, eight ground balls and six draw controls to her six-goal performance for the Griffins. Alyssa Tomsic had five goals and six points while Lauren Mitros had a six-point afternoon as well thanks to three goals and three assists. Wood finished with 16 saves.

DelVal will travel to Immaculata University for a non-conference game on Saturday, March 3 (1 p.m.)
