Box Score BETHLEHEM (PA) – The Delaware Valley University women's basketball team fell to host Moravian College, 76-65, in the opening game of the Steel Club Classic on Sunday afternoon.
The Aggies move to .500 overall at 5-5 while the Greyhounds improved to 8-3. Moravian advances to face Cabrini University who defeated SUNY New Paltz, 72-61, in the opening game. DelVal will face off against the Hawks in the consolation game tomorrow at 11 a.m.
DelVal trailed 13-8 in the first quarter, but outscored Moravian 11-2 the rest of the way to take a two-point, 19-15, lead into the second. Five different Aggies scored in the stanza, led by eight points from
Dom Moser.
DelVal continued its run by scoring the first four points of the second and led 23-15 after
Monika Smallwood found Moser for a layup. It led by as many as 13 after consecutive treys by
Ashley Smink and
Danielle Skedzielewski made it a 40-27 game with 2:41 left before the break.
The Greyhounds went on an 11-1 run to end the half and trailed by one, 41-38, going into the third. Karlie Brogan and Maddie Capuano each hit a trey during that spurt.
The teams played to three tied scores in the third quarter, including a 50-50 deadlock with 3:50 on the clock. From there, Moravian went on a 6-0 run, but an
Ashley Smink 3-pointer just before the end of the quarter made it a three-point game going into the fourth.
Smink tied the game at 58-58 early in the fourth with an and-1 conversion, but Nadine Ewald answered at the other end with an and-1 of her own that sparked a 12-4 run to put the Greyhounds on top, 70-62, with under five minutes left in regulation.
Moravian went on to outscore the Aggies, 18-10, in the fourth quarter to secure the 76-65 victory and advance to the championship game of the tournament.
The Aggies shot better from the field (22-of-52, 42.3%), and the three-point line (5-of-15, 33.3%), than the Greyhounds, but shot nine less field goals and seven less free throws. Moravian was 24-of-61 (39.3%) from the field and 6-of-19 (31.6%) from deep.
Smink led DelVal with 23 points and seven rebounds and was 7-for-7 from the line. Moser scored 14 points and hauled in four boards while Grohowski finished with 10 points and six rebounds.
Capuano led all players in the game with 26 points and Ewald notched a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Jennifer McClave also scored 14 and added a game-high five assists as nine players in total cracked the score sheet for Moravian.
