Box Score LANCASTER (PA) – Keen State College went on a 12-0 run late in the game to pull away with an 83-72 victory over Delaware Valley University in the consolation game at the Sponaugle New Year Tournament at Franklin & Marshall College.
The Aggies move to .500 overall at 6-6 while the Owls improved to 6-4.
Keene State hit three treys to start the game and got out to a 9-1 lead after 2:20 of play. The Aggies still trailed by eight at 19-11 with 11:25 on the clock, before
Damian Washington led the team on a 14-5 run to take their first lead of the game. The sophomore scored 11 points in the spurt, including a pair of 3-pointers, to put DelVal on top, 25-24, with just under five minutes left before the half.
Washington and freshman Terrence Johnson combined for 22 points in the first half, but the Owls held a slim 33-31 advantage at the break. Seven different players scored for Keene State.
The second half was back-and-forth through the first 14:16 of play, with neither team leading by more than five, and included three deadlocks and four lead changes.
An
Andre' Butler and-1 play, and a
Mike Cianciulli jumper, tied the game at 63-63 with 5:44 left in regulation.
The game was knotted again at 65-65 before Keene State converted three consecutive three-point plays and made two technical foul free throws as part of a 12-0 run that gave it a 77-65 advantage with three minutes left in regulation.
Cianciulli put an end to the spurt with a 3-pointer to make it a nine-point game, but that's the closest that DelVal would get the rest of the way as the Owls secured an 83-72 victory.
The Aggies shot 24-for-63 (38.1%) from the field and 8-for-27 (29.6%) from 3-point land compared to 28-of-56 (50%) shooting from the field and 9-of-24 (37.5%) from beyond-the-arc from Keene State.
Washington finished with a game-high 25 points, including 4-of-12 shooting from behind-the-arc and 7-of-8 from the charity stripe, and added five rebounds. Cianciulli followed with 15 points and
Alex Matsinye poured in 11 to go with seven boards. Butler finished the game with eight points, five rebounds, four assists, four steals, and a blocked shot. Johnson came off the bench and contributed 10 points, three rebounds and two assists.
The Owls were led by a 24 point, six rebound, four assist effort from Ty Nichols. Seven others cracked the score sheet including James Anozie and Miguel Prieto who reached double figures with 16 and 13 points, respectively. They each grabbed five rebounds while Prieto dished out a game-high six assists.
DelVal will be back in action on Friday, January 4 at Muhlenberg for a 7 p.m. tip.
