DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Three different players eclipsed the 20-point mark for the game as Delaware Valley University defeated visiting Southern Virginia University in its home opener, 86-71, for its second win of the season.
The Aggies (2-0) came out in the first half and hit four treys through the first 6:15 of the game, including three from the sophomore Washington, to take a 17-14 lead. Later in the half, DelVal used an 11-3 run to take its largest lead of the half, 39-27. Washington had another one of his five three's in the half, and
Mike Cianciulli hit a jumper to cap the spurt.
The Knights (0-2) countered with a 7-0 run to end the half and make it a 39-34 game with four and a half minutes left before the break. DelVal went on to score 12 of the final eight points to take a 51-42 lead into the break.
Cianciulli, the junior guard that missed last season with an injury, went five-of-six from beyond the arc in the second half to help the Aggies maintained a double-digit lead for most of the second half.
Washington had the highlight of the night with 5:19 left in regulation when
Alex Matsinye stole the ball, and sprung Washington who threw down on a Southern Virginia defender.
DelVal led by as many as 20, 86-66, late in the second half and cruised to the 86-71 victory.
The Aggies shot 52-percent from the field, 50-percent from 3-point land and 83.3-percent from the free throw line. Cianciulli matched his career-high and led all scorers with 27 points, including six treys.
Lybrant Robinson shot 60-percent from the field and finished with 21 points while Washington finished with 20 points, five rebounds, two blocks, and two steals. Matsinye and
Damani Myers had team-highs of eight rebounds apiece and each grabbed two steals.
Southern Virginia shot 37.9-percent from the field and 34.8-percent from 3-point land. Three players reached double-digit scoring, led by 18 points from Michael Neufville on three-of-five shooting from beyond the arc. He also had nine boards to lead the team. Trey Dill finished with 15 points and Tyler McCreadle dropped 10. Alec Johnson finished with nine points and six assists.
DelVal will take on nationally-ranked Swarthmore College on the road on Saturday, November 17 at 6 p.m.
