DOYLESTOWN (PA) – The Delaware Valley University men's soccer team went toe-to-toe with Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom foe FDU-Florham on Tuesday night, but dropped a 2-1 home decision on a late goal in the 74
th minute.
The Devils improved to 4-9 overall and 1-2 in league play while the Aggies dropped to 3-9 and 0-3.
FDU-Florham got on the board in the sixth minute of the game when Justin Estremera gathered a ball in DelVal territory and sent a long through-ball into the box. Ricky LaStella raced to it on the other end and deposited it inside the far post for the 1-0 lead.
The Aggies had a golden opportunity off a throw-in down the other end.
Patrick McCarthy threw the ball into the box and
Austin Daniels got a foot on it off the bounce, but drilled it into the keeper.
The Devils maintained their 1-0 advantage into halftime.
DelVal started the second half with a spurt and controlled play in FDU territory in the early going. The result was a Sam DiBella shot from the left wing that just rolled by the far post. However, in the 51
st minute, the Aggies cashed in. A great transition play led to
Patrick Lawler playing a through ball into the box where
Billy Frazier Jr. won a foot race and touched it past the keeper and into the net for the 1-1 tie.
In the 64
th minute, DelVal had its best chance to break the tie when
Nick Miller got behind the Devils defense and was in all alone on the breakaway, but his shot missed wide left.
Ten minutes later, FDU-Florham broke through and snapped the deadlock. A transition play led to Estremera gathering the ball at mid-field and sending Brendan McGregor in on a breakaway and the sophomore deposited the game-winning goal in the 74
th minute.
Josh Jarrett made two saves in goal for the Aggies and his counterpart, Tiernan Grey, made one at the other end. Estremera finished with two assists on the day with Halpin and McGregor earning the tallies. Fro the Aggies, Frazier, Jr. netted his second goal of the season and Lawler got his first assist.
DelVal will face another MAC Freedom opponent homecoming weekend as it welcomes Misericordia University to Doylestown for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
