PURCHASE (NY) –
Sarah Young's goal off a free kick in the second overtime lifted Delaware Valley University to a 2-1, double overtime win at Manhattanville College.
It marked the fifth straight year that the battle between the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom foes went to overtime and the Aggies have a 2-1-2 mark in those contests. This year's win – the second straight triumph for DelVal against the Valiants – improved the injury-plagued Aggies to 4-7 overall and 1-1 in the conference. Manhattanville dropped to 2-8 and 0-2.
Three minutes into the second overtime, DelVal's Christiana Millilli got off a shot that was wide right. Shortly after, the Valiants were called for a foul and the Aggies were rewarded a free kick from 25 yards out. Young came up from her defensive spot to take the kick in a similar situation to last year when her free kick was inadvertently re-directed into the goal by a Manhattanville player. This time, Young took care of it herself and she found the back of the net exactly 4:42 into the second extra session for the game winner.
Neither team scored for 80-plus minutes until
Erin Myers gave DelVal a 1-0 advantage as she took a pass from
Samantha Greim in the middle of the box and put it in the right side of the net. It looked like the tally would stand as the clock ticked under a minute to go, but Ashley Pacheco connected off a rebound with 53 second left. That led to yet another overtime and Young's heroics.
The Valiants outshot the Aggies, 27-9, and had all seven corner opportunities in the game.
Haley Young was strong in net all game as she stopped 15 shots, six in the first overtime.
DelVal will host FDU-Florham for a MAC Freedom game on Wednesday, October 10 (7 p.m.).
