DOYLESTOWN (PA) – King's College connected on 15 of 29 attempts from 3-point land as the Monarchs shot their way to an 80-70, Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom victory over host Delaware Valley University.
King's improved to 9-11 overall and 5-4 in the conference while the Aggies fell to 4-16 and 2-7.
The Monarchs trailed for just over a minute in the game and that was when DelVal held a 3-0 advantage on a trio of free throws by
Andre' Butler. Connor Callejas and Tyler Millan sank back-to-back treys and they were never behind again.
King's built its lead to as many as nine in the opening stanza before the Aggies tied it up on two occasions. The last came at 35-35 after
Austin Stoeckel hit two free throws with 1:12 to go before halftime. Just eight seconds later, Dan Angelo drilled a 3-pointer, the eighth of the half for the Monarchs, to give them the three-point advantage at the break.
DelVal got the opening bucket of the second half as
Damian Washington drove in for a layup just 17 seconds in. However, King's followed with a 16-2 run, including four bombs from beyond the arc, for a 54-39 lead with 14:51 remaining.
The lead ballooned to 16 on a pair of occasions, including after Tony Maloney hit a 3-pointer with 10:23 left on the clock for a 62-46 score. The Monarchs were still up double digits as the clock ticked under the five minute mark before the Aggies made a late run. Two layups by
Lybrant Robinson with a pair of
Austin Chabot free throws sandwiched in-between made it a 69-65 ballgame with 3:15 remaining. However, that was as close as DelVal would come as King's scored four straight from the foul line, en route to the 80-70 triumph.
Callejas and Millan combined for eight of the Monarchs' 15 treys. Callejas was also 8-for-10 from the foul line as he finished with 24 points. Millan dropped in 13. Chris Fazzini added 17 points and nine rebounds.
For the Aggies, who were 1-for-9 from beyond the arc, Robinson came off the bench and led the way with 14 points and seven rebounds. Chabot had 13 points and five boards while Stoeckel (11 points), Butler (10) and
Alex Matsinye (10) also hit double figures in scoring.
DelVal will travel to defending MAC Freedom champion Misericordia University on Saturday, February 3 (3 p.m.).
