CHESTERTOWN (MD) – Washington College scored three times in the second half as the Shorewomen held off Delaware Valley University's upset bid with a 3-1, non-conference victory.
Washington improved to 5-2 on the season while the Aggies fell to 1-5-1.
DelVal was outshot, 12-2, over the first 45 minutes, it was the Aggies with the 1-0 lead at the intermission thanks to sophomore
Calla Gibson. Just over eight minutes into the stanza, Gibson stole a clearing attempt and put a shot in the upper right corner from about 25 yards out. It was the first collegiate goal of her career.
It stayed a 1-0 game for the next 52 minutes until the Shorewomen tied it up as Cayla Marcinko converted a crossing feed from Lauren Neary. Washington took the lead with 28:23 remaining on a Picabo French tally while Emily Caldarelli added an insurance goal with 6:09 left.
The Shorewomen finished with a 24-2 advantage in shots and had 10 of the game's 12 corner opportunities. Freshman
Haley Young was strong in defeat as she recorded 10 saves for the Aggies.
DelVal will travel to Albright College for a non-conference game on Saturday, September 23 (8 p.m.).
