MEDIA (PA) – Sophomore
Nick Gaetano scored his first collegiate goal in the 88
th minute to lift the Delaware Valley University men's soccer team over host Penn State Brandywine, 1-0.
The Aggies avenged last season's home loss to the Lions with the victory and improved their mark to 2-2 on the 2017 campaign. Penn State also sits at 2-2 after the defeat.
With just under three minutes to play in regulation,
Austin Daniels sent a corner kick into the box that the Lions got to first, but failed to clear. Gaetano gathered and let a shot go from long range that beat the keeper, for what proved to be the game winner, with just 2:40 on the clock.
The Aggies were playing man-down after
Zach Miller was sent off with a red card in the 78
th minute, but rallied to maintain pressure down the stretch. They nearly put the game away moments before the game-winner when Gaetano took a corner and found Daniels who rang one off the post and followed with another shot that was saved.
DelVal outshot Penn State 8-7 in the second stanza with a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal. For the game, it was the Lions with a 17-10 edge in shots and a 5-2 lead in corner attempts.
Connor Hedgepeth made 12 saves in goal for the Aggies while Brandon Welden made four for the Lions at the other end.
DelVal will stay on the road as it travels to Immaculata for a 3:30 p.m. kick off on Saturday, September 16.
