PURCHASE (NY) – Freshman
Gillian Nardelli scored two goals, but it was not enough as visiting Delaware Valley University fell to Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom foe Manhattanville College, 3-2, on Saturday.
The Valiants, who made the MAC Freedom tournament a season ago, improved to 3-9 overall and 1-2 in conference play while the Aggies fell to 4-8 and 0-3.
Nardelli got the scoring started just over 20 minutes into the game as she pounced on a loose ball and put it inside the left post for her first tally of the day and a 1-0 Aggie lead.
Less than five minutes later, Manhattanville tied the game at one when Emily Antinozzi deposited a rebound into the back of the cage. The teams went to the break knotted at one apiece.
In the second half, Haley Linkroum deflected a shot from Melissa Stys passed the Aggie keeper to give the Valiants a 2-1 lead. Antinozzi extended the lead with her second of the day off an assist from Lisa Maxwell with 13:46 left in regulation.
DelVal fought back by earning five penalty corners and getting three shots on cage and its efforts paid off as Nardelli cashed in her second goal of the day to make it 3-2 with less than five minutes left in regulation.
Alexa Aguilar was credit with the assist, her second of the season.
The Aggies earned three more corners down the stretch, but could not convert as the Valiants held on for the 3-2 victory.
Nardelli's now leads the team with eight goals on the season.
Madi Colon registered three shots on cage in this game and
Rosie Bishop absorbed five saves.
Manhattanville was led by Antinozzi's three shots on goal including two that found the back of the cage. Kaitlin Halloran played all 70 minutes in goal and made six saves while her defense was credited with four saves on the afternoon.
DelVal will travel to Bryn Athyn College for a 7 p.m. contest on Wednesday, October 11 before closing out its schedule with four MAC Freedom games.
