DOYLESTOWN (PA) – The Delaware Valley University women's soccer team honored its seniors in style on Saturday afternoon with a 3-2 overtime victory over visiting Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom foe Manhattanville College.
The Aggies improved to 3-12-1 overall and 1-6 in league play while the Valiants fell to 3-9-1 and 0-6 in the MAC Freedom.
DelVal trailed 2-0 at halftime after goals by Ashley Pacheco and Jess Roman in the opening stanza.
The Aggies came out of the break poised for a comeback as they ripped off three shots and earned two corner opportunities in the first five and a half minutes of the second half. In the 57
th minute,
Taylor Boyer let a shot go from long range that rang the crossbar and stayed out.
They finally broke through with 13:30 left in regulation as Boyer got behind the defense and struck a low shot to the far post to make it a 2-1 game.
Then, in the 86
th minute, consistent hard work in the offensive end paid off. It was Boyer that sent the ball across the goal line and
Samantha Greim used a sliding effort to tip it across the line and tie the game at two apiece and, ultimately, send the game to overtime.
With 1:30 left in the first overtime, DelVal earned a free kick 50 yards away from the goal.
Sarah Young took the kick and sent a ball with good arch into the box. It bounced once in the box, amidst a crowd of players, and went over the keepers head and under the crossbar to complete the comeback and give the Aggies the 3-2 home victory.
DelVal totaled 12 shots and seven corner kicks on the day. Boyer finished with three points on a goal and an assist while Greim and
Sarah Young earned the other tallies. Freshman keeper
Madelyne Medina earned her first collegiate win and made nine saves in the effort.
For seniors,
Somer Meadath and
Kylie Williams, today marked their final home game. The two have combined for eight goals, four assists and 20 points in their career. Each have also been named to the MAC Fall Academic Honor Roll twice in their time at DelVal.
Manhattanville finished with 16 shots and two corner opportunities. Julianna Browne played all 90 minutes in goal and made three saves.
The Aggies will conclude the 2017 campaign with a conference game on the road at Misericordia University on Friday, October 27 at 7 p.m.
