DOYLESTOWN (PA) –
Kara Imes scored with 22:48 remaining and goalkeeper
Rosie Bishop made it stand with 10 saves as host Delaware Valley University upset Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom front-runner FDU-Florham, 1-0, on Wednesday evening.
It was the final home game of the season for the Aggies, who improved to 6-9 overall and 1-4 in the conference. The Devils entered the contest a perfect 4-0 in league play (11-4 overall) and have dropped into a first-place tie with Misericordia University.
The two teams combined for 17 shots in the first half (nine for DelVal), but none of them found the back of the cage. FDU-Florham controlled the play for the first 12 minutes of the second stanza and the squad has five shots, but Bishop was there to stop two, including one off a blast just four minutes in.
Later in the half, the Aggies'
Gillian Nardelli dribbled the ball down the field and then had a restart at the 35-yard line. She fed a pass to
Carlie Baldus 10 yards up the field and Baldus sent the ball into the circle past a Devils' defender. Fellow senior
Kara Imes caught up to the pass just inside the 10-yard line and blasted a shot into the far left corner of the goal for her third tally of the year. It turned out to be the only shot for DelVal for the first 29 minutes of the second half, but it was good enough for a 1-0 lead.
The Devils poured on the pressure following Imes' goal as they recorded five shots and four corners in the next seven minutes. Bishop made two big saves during that stretch and received from help as senior
Sonya Laley stopped one at the right post for a defensive save.
Following an Aggie timeout, FDU-Florham had two shots and three corners as the clocked ticked under the seven-minute mark. Baldus was then called for a yellow card and given seven minutes, leaving DelVal a player short for the remainder or regulation. However, the Devils managed just one shot the rest of the way – an attempt by Ariana Wexler that went just wide with 2:54 to go – and the Aggie celebrated the win.
FDU-Florham finished with a 21-11 advantage in shots and a 13-7 advantage in corners. Bishop had one of the top games of her young career as the sophomore finished with nine saves, including five in the second half. It was her fourth shutout of the season.
DelVal has two road games remaining, starting with a trip to MAC Freedom foe Wilkes University on Saturday, October 21 (11:30 a.m.).
