DelVal Men's Basketball Drops 81-74 Decision At Manhattanville

Box Score PURCHASE (NY) – Manhattanville College had five players reach double figures in scoring as the host Valiants posted an 81-74, Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom victory over Delaware Valley University to snap the Aggies' four-game winning streak.

The loss dropped DelVal to 16-4 overall and 7-2 in conference play. However, the Aggies still sit alone in first place as DeSales University (14-5, 6-3) fell at home to Misericordia University. DelVal travels to DeSales on Saturday, February 6 for their second and final regular-season meeting (the Aggies held home court with a 75-47 triumph just two weeks ago). Manhattanville improved to 12-8 overall and 5-4 in the MSC Freedom for a three-way tie for third place.

The 81 points were the most allowed by DelVal since the fourth game of the season. In fact, the Aggies entered the night allowing just an average of 64.3 points per contest. Manhattanville shot 45 percent from the field and finished with nine treys in 21 attempts (42.9%).

In the first half alone, the Valiants hit 14 of their 28 shots from the field, including a 6-for-12 effort from 3-point land. They led throughout most of the stanza, including by as many as eight, before taking a 42-36 advantage into the intermission.

Manhattanville kept it up to start the second half as it forced three turnovers in the first 61 seconds and scored five points for its largest lead of the game at 11, 47-36. Tyliek Kimbrough then took over for the Aggies. He ended the Aggie drought with a trey and, following a Chris Moran block on the defensive end, he drove to the lane and scored. Kimbrough then scored again on a drive for a 7-0 run and a 47-43 ballgame.

The Valiants quickly regrouped and got their lead back up 11, 58-47, with 13:42 remaining. DelVal countered with a 12-5 spurt, culminating with a three-point play by Matthew Gerrner, to get back to within four at 63-59 with 8:31 to go. Manhattanville scored six straight and eight of 10, but a pair of Gerner bombs with a Zach Sly layup sandwiched in-between cut the Aggie deficit to one, 71-70 with 3:23 remaining.

The teams traded two points before the Valiants broke the Aggie press for an easy layup. DelVal missed a 3-pointer that would have tied the game and Andrew Winter followed with a pair of free throws at the other  end to move the lead up to five. The Aggies could not score on their next two possessions and three points from Dom Arena made it 80-72 with less than a minute left to play. Gerner was fouled while shooting a trey and he hit two free throws before missing the third. The Aggies grabbed the offensive board but could not connect on a 3-pointer. Manhattanville added a free throw in the final 20 seconds for the 81-74 final.

Arena came off the bench to score 19 points while Anthony Maester also had 19 for the Valiants. Alex Tuci netted 11 points while Winter and Chris Ayson had 10 points apiece with Winter also grabbing 10 boards.

Kimbrough led DelVal with 19 points and five assists. Gerner hit four treys off the bench and finished the night with 17 points in 19 minutes. Moran had 14 points and eight boards while Barry Brockington hit double digits with 10 points.
