Box Score DOYLESTOWN (PA) – The Delaware Valley University men's soccer team recorded the first four goals, en route to a 4-2 season-opening victory over visiting Penn State Hazleton on Tuesday.
It was all Aggies in the first half as they received goals from juniors
Tim Szram,
Alec Scarano, and
Max Drummond as well as freshman
Sebastian Zambrano to open up a 4-0 advantage.
The scoring opened 10:43 into the half when freshman
Patrick McCarthy found Szram with a cross to the left side of the box. DelVal then stormed to its four-goal advantage, scoring three goals in less than three minutes. Freshman
Nick Miller sent a through ball to Scarano, who ran uncontested to the cage with 22:25 remaining. Miller's second helper came with 20:06 left when he passed to Drummond. Drummond then streaked along the right side of the box and sent a shot from near the goal line into the far left side of the net. The Aggies' final tally was just 38 seconds later when Scarano kicked a ball up the middle of the field to Zambrano, who beat out a defender to get the shot on goal.
The Nittany Lions got on the board with 2:51 left in the first half when junior Kyle Venditti picked up a loose ball in the middle of the box and fired a shot past keeper
Austin Brotman. They added one 21 minutes into the second when Laila Cabrera passed ahead to Venditti on the right side. Venditti then lobbed a cross over to the left side, which was knocked in by Steven Principe.
DelVal held a commanding 25-8 advantage in shots and had a 9-6 edge in corners. Brotman, a sophomore, had three saves, including a pair of big stops in the opening moments of the game.
Sophomore keeper James Fisher made 11 saves for Penn State Hazleton.
The Aggies will look to put together a winning streak when they visit Penn State Abington on Thursday, September 3 (4:00 p.m.).
