Sam Foy's career-high 22 points was not enough to produce a victory for the Delaware Valley University women's basketball team as the Aggies dropped their Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom opener to King's College, 85-74 on Wednesday evening.
DelVal fell to 1-5 overall while the Lady Monarchs improved to 5-1.
It was a back-and-forth first half as King's opened up a 13-7 lead in the first 3:51, including three baskets from beyond the arc. The Aggies bounced back with eight of the next 10 points to tie the score at 15. The Lady Monarchs recorded the following seven points to go ahead, 22-15. DelVal went on a 9-2 run to bring the game to a 24-24 deadlock with 7:29 to go in the second quarter. Freshman
Dahlia Wilson produced five points in the surge and Foy had the other four. However, King's closed the period with a 20-6 run over the final seven minutes to take a 44-30 advantage into the locker room. Senior Jennifer Fabian led all scorers with 14 points as the Lady Monarchs shot over 46 percent from the field, including 61 percent from long range.
King's kept the Aggies at arm's length in the second half as DelVal would only get within 10 points on five occasions, the last coming on freshman
Danielle Skedzielewski's triple with 1:59 remaining in the third quarter (57-47). The Lady Monarchs then broke the game open with a 14-6 run that bled into the fourth quarter, giving them their largest lead of the night at 18. Freshmen Cayle Spencer and Alexis Steeber each had five points in the spurt. DelVal got back within 12 with nine of the next 12 points; four by Foy, three from senior
Kelsey Kilpatrick and two from senior
Eireann Anastasi. The two teams traded baskets for the final five minutes. Foy registered 14 of her points in the second half and Fabian tallied 13.
King's shot nearly 47 percent from the field, including making half of its shots (11-22) from three-point distance. The Lady Monarchs had a 44-40 advantage on the glass. Fabian had a successful homecoming as the Doylestown native finished with a game-high 27 points and 12 rebounds. Junior Kayla Feairheller contributed with 15 points while junior Kasey Seitz and Steeber had 12 apiece. Seitz also added 10 assists and five boards. Spencer chipped in with 10 points and sophomore Olivia Hoffman brought down nine boards.
For the Aggies, freshmen
Brianna Rivello and Wilson followed Foy's 22 points with 13 apiece. Skedzielewski and Anastasi each tallied 10 points. Rivello, Skedzielewski and Wilson all had seven rebounds. Rivello also dished six assists.
DelVal will look to recover when it travels to conference opponent Eastern University on Saturday, December 5 (1:00 p.m.).
