DelVal Women Drop First Game At Scotty Wood Tournament, 62-53 To SUNY Cortland

ALLENTOWN (PA) – The Delaware Valley University women's basketball team dropped its first game at the Scotty Wood Tournament on Friday, 62-53 to SUNY Cortland.

The tournament is being hosted by Muhlenberg College. The Aggies (0-2) will face Hood College in the consolation game on Saturday, November 21 at 1:00 p.m. Hood dropped an 82-50 ecision to host Muhlenberg College. Muhlenberg and Cortland will meet in the 6:00 p.m. championship game.

The Red Dragons (1-0) held an 11-8 lead with 2:19 to go in the opening quarter. DelVal orchestrated a 16-7 run to go ahead by six (24-18) with 7:35 remaining in the second. Five players recorded points in the spurt, led by junior Sam Foy with six. However, Cortland recovered to produce the next 12 points and take a 30-24 advantage (3:26). All 12 points were scored by junior Stephanie Rice on a trio of three-pointers, a jumper and a foul shot. The Red Dragons were up 39-31 at the break. Rice led all scorers in the period with 19 followed by Foy with nine.

Senior Eireann Anastasi began the second half with a three-pointer for the Aggies to cut the deficit to five (39-34) but Cortland followed with a 9-0 surge to increase its lead to 14 (48-34) with 3:08 on the third quarter clock. Four players contributed to the run and it was the largest margin of the contest. Not one to go down without a fight, DelVal battled back, scoring 14 of the next 19 points to trail by five (53-48) with 4:19 left in the game. Anastasi registered 10 of the 14 Aggie points.

Rice converted a layup and a free throw followed by a pair of foul shots from Anastasi and the score was 56-50 (3:08). After two points at the line by the Red Dragons, Anastasi nailed a triple to get DelVal back within five (58-53) with 1:14 to go. However, Cortland put the game away with four points at the stripe in the final minute.

Rice finished with a game-high 24 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Cassidy Chapko totaled 16 points followed by senior Caysea Cohen and junior Danielle Levine with nine and eight respectively. Cohen and Levine also grabbed eight rebounds apiece.

Anastasi paced the Aggies with 23 points to bring her career total to 1,246. She needs just seven more to break into the program's all-time top-10. Foy ended the game with 11 points followed by freshman Brianna Rivello with seven. Rivello corralled nine rebounds, Anastasi had eight and freshman Danielle Skedzielewski came down with seven. Freshman Morgan Mitchell and Foy each added six boards.
