Shannon Barlow scored a career-high 18 points as the Aggies showed no signs of rust from a long layoff and defeated host Manhattanville College, 76-55, in a Freedom Conference game.
Delaware Valley, which last played back on December 29, improved to 6-8 overall and 1-2 in the Freedom while the Valiants fell to 9-5 overall and 0-3 in league action.
The center receiving the attention entering Wednesday's match-up was Manhattanville's Alyson Caiazzo, who was averaging 17.1 points and 15.8 rebounds per game. However, it was Barlow's night to shine for the Aggies as she was 8-for-11 from the field and a perfect 2-for-2 from the foul line. She also grabbed five rebounds, all on the defensive end, in 31 minutes of action.
Meanwhile, a combination of Barlow, double teams and a zone defense forced Caiazzo into a 1-for-6 shooting night and a two-point performance. Caiazzo did lead all players with 10 rebounds in 33 minutes.
Delaware Valley dominated from the opening tip as it never trailed in the game and shot 56.6 percent from the field, including 60.5 percent from inside the 3-point land. They distributed the ball all evening as they were credited with 24 assists on 30 made baskets. Meanwhile, the Aggie defense limited the Valiants to 34 percent shooting in the game and forced 25 turnovers.
Delaware Valley led by seven, 19-12, after eight minutes of action. Manhattanville closed the gap to one with 7:08 to go in the opening half, but the Aggies scored 10 of the next 12, including five from
Brittany Wood, for a nine-point advantage. They eventually led by five, 35-30, at the break.
Delaware Valley opened the second half by scoring the first six points and 21 of the first 27 for a 56-36 advantage with 13:56 remaining. Barlow and
Eireann Anastasi had six points apiece to pace the spurt.
The Aggies, who built the lead to as many as 26, outscored the Valiants, 41-25, in the second half. Eight players hit the scoring column in the contest with Anastasi leading the way with 22 points. The junior guard is now just three points of the coveted 1,000-point plateau for a career. Anastasi, who also had seven assists on the night, will look to reach the milestone at home against Wilkes University on Saturday, January 17.
Brenna Coll notched 11 points, nine assists and four boards. Wood added nine points and six rebounds while
Agatha Drozd had six points and four rebounds.
Manhattanville, which was held 14 points under their season scoring average, was led by Ashley Franklin's 13 points. Ashley Raaf had 12 points in the loss.
