Eireann Anastasi and
Brenna Coll scored 24 points apiece as Delaware Valley College cruised to a 74-53 victory at King's College and moved to within one win of a Freedom Conference tournament berth.
The Aggies improved to 14-8 overall and 7-4 in the Freedom. Their victory, combined with Eastern University's loss at Misericordia University put them in a tie for third place and just a game behind DeSales University for second place and a home postseason game.
Delaware Valley is three games ahead of both Misericordia and Manhattanville College with three games to play. The Aggies, who are 8-0 at home this year, host Misericordia on Saturday and can clinch their first Freedom tournament berth since 2010 with a victory.
Delaware Valley trailed, 7-2, in the early going on Wednesday evening when it scored 12 straight points, including eight from Anastasi, to take charge. The Lady Monarchs (5-17, 1-10) pulled back to within four at 26-22, but the Aggies outscored the hosts, 9-4, over the final four minutes of the half to take a 35-26 lead. Anastasi had five of the nine points and finished the first half with 16 points on 6-for-7 shooting from the field (3-for-3 from 3-point land).
Delaware Valley shot 45.5 percent from the field while its defense limited the Lady Monarchs to an 8-for-32 effort (25%), including 0-for-7 from 3-point land (the Aggies were 4-for-11). King's stayed within range as it grabbed 16 offensive rebounds and notched 17 second-chance points with most of them coming from the foul line (10-for-15 compared to 1-for-1 for Delaware Valley).
The Aggies went up by 15 in the second half, but King's pulled to within seven, 45-38, when Jessica McHugh hit a 3-pointer with 13:13 remaining. Delaware Valley then went on a 11-0 spurt over the next three minutes as
Shannon Barlow hit two free throws, Coll hit two jumpers with a
Bridget Sobon jumper sandwiched in-between, and
Agatha Drozd drained a 3-pointer. King's never got closer than 13 points the rest of the way.
Delaware Valley finished the game shooting 29-for-65 (44.6%) from the field, including a 7-for-20 effort from beyond the arc. Meanwhile, the Lady Monarchs hit just two treys in 20 attempts and were 18-for-62 (29%) from the fields. King's managed just seven offensive boards in the second half.
Anastasi was 9-for-12 from the field, including 3-for-4 from 3-point land. She also added five rebounds and four steals. Coll had 13 of her 24 points in the second half and she also had six rebounds and five assists. Drozd contributed nine points, six boards and five assists while Barlow had six points and a team-high nine rebounds.
Jennifer Fabian had a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds for King's. Kayla Feairheller had 12 points and seven boards while Marissa Manning also had seven rebounds to go along with 10 points.
