AGGIE MEN'S SOCCER FALLS TO DESALES IN DOUBLE OT

Box Score DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Wes Frebel capitalized on a breakaway opportunity with 1:05 remaining in the second overtime to lift DeSales University to a 2-1, Freedom Conference victory over host Delaware Valley College.

The setback dropped the Aggies to 3-12-2 overall and 0-5 in league play while the Bulldogs improved to 6-10-1 and 1-4.

On a rain soaked afternoon, it was Delaware Valley which got on the board first as the Aggies earned a penalty kick due to a handball with 12:31 remaining in the opening half.  Steve Mannato stepped up to take the shot and he buried it in the low left corner for the 1-0 advantage that the Aggies would take into the break.

In the second half, DeSales applied the pressure as it outshot Delaware Valley, 13-4, in the stanza, including two attempts that would have found the back of the net if not for Aggie defenders backing up their keeper.

Then with 12:21 remaining in regulation, it was Phil Bortz who got the equalizer for the Bulldogs with a diving header from eight yards out off a cross from Mike Lawler. The two teams combined for six shots the rest of the half, but none found the back of the net as the game went to overtime.

Each squad got off one shot in the first overtime period and Delaware Valley had three in the second overtime before Alan Smith sprung Frebel on a breakaway with a long through ball. Frebel put the ball in the low left corner for his sixth goal of the season and the winning tally.

Justin Mannato made his first start in goal for the Aggies, due to an injury to starting keeper Austin Brotman, and registered eight saves in a solid outing.  For DeSales, it was Colin Sulpizio who picked up his sixth win of the year with five saves.
