Box Score ANNVILLE (PA) -- Junior forward
Brenna Coll set a school single-game record with 16 made field goals and finished with 36 points, but it wasn't enough as Delaware Valley College fell to Neumann University, 89-84, in overtime of the consolation game at the Rinso Marquette Tournament.
Coll broke the previous record of 14 field goals set by current assistant coach
Kim Vennera in a 2009 game against DeSales University. The 36 points tied Coll for the seventh-highest, single-game scoring output in program history. Coll also added 14 rebounds and two blocked shots and was named to the all-tournament team.
The Aggies (0-2) found themselves trailing by just three points with 34 seconds remaining. Seven seconds later, Coll committed her fourth personal foul, sending Jessica Schlesman to the line where she converted both free throw attempts to extended the lead 77-72. Delaware Valley hurried down the court and sophomore guard
Eireann Anastasi drove the lane and made a layup while being fouled on the play. She finished the old-fashioned three-point play to cut the Neumann lead to two. Shortly after, Coll dribbled down the court and connected on a layup to tie the game at 77-77 and send it to overtime.
Anastasi put the Aggies ahead, 80-79, early in the overtime period with her third trey of the game, but the Knights scored 10 of the game's final 14 points to seal the victory.
Neumann led throughout the first half and opened its largest lead at 32-24 after Sarah Roberts hit one of her two treys with 2:53 left in the half. Delaware Valley then scored seven of the final nine points in the stanza behind a pair of free throws and a 3-pointer from
Agatha Drozd to cut its deficit to three, 34-31, at the break.
The Aggies came out fast in the second half as junior guard
Brittany Wood connected from beyond the arc to tie it at 34-34. Moments later, Anastasi drove to the lane for a layup, giving Delaware Valley the lead for the first time in the game. The two teams went back and forth before Anastasi hit a trey and Wood made a layup to give the Aggies their largest lead of the game at 45-40.
The lead was short-lived as the Knights' Erica Marvel scored the next 13 points for Neumann in a 13-6 run that put her team ahead 53-51 with just over 11 minutes to play in the game. The teams went back and forth from there as they were tied five more times in regulation before the overtime and the Neumann win.
Anastasi shot 3-for-9 from beyond the arc and registered 18 points, five assists and two steals while Drozd pitched in with 15 points and eight assists. Wood had 10 points and six boards in the loss.
Neumann's top scorer of the day was Marvel as she hit for 30 points and three steals. JoHanna Metzger registered a double-double with 20 points and a game-high 19 rebounds.
