Box Score DOYLESTOWN (PA) –
Peter Tantillo and
Steve Mannato scored second-half goals while
Chase Clement had five saves on the afternoon as the Delaware Valley College men's soccer team earned its first Freedom Conference victory in five years with a 2-0 shutout of visiting Wilkes University.
The win was their first triumph in league play since they handed King's College its only loss of the 2008 season. It improved the Aggies to 8-6-1 overall and, more importantly put them in the Freedom tournament race as their 1-2 conference mark has them a half game behind the fourth and final spot going into Wednesday's night action in the conference. Wilkes fell to 8-6 overall and 1-2 in the Freedom.
In a hard fought, physical game, Clement played exceptional in net as the 2012 first-team all-conference honoree earned his third solo shutout of the season. He was even credited with three shots on long free kicks.
In the first half, Clement was challenged by a breakaway shot from Eric McAnena where he came out of the net and turned it away with a beautiful foot save. The game remained scoreless going into the second half.
Tantillo gave Delaware Valley the lead and scored the ultimate game-winner in the 63rd minute.
Kevin Robinson was able to beat his defender to the near corner of the field and sent a right-footed cross into the box where Tantillo went up high over the defender and headed the ball into the upper right corner of the net. The goal was Tantillo's sixth of the season and it upped his point total to 14.
The Aggies put the icing on the cake in the final minute of play when Robinson sprung
Steve Mannato down the left side of the field. Mannato dribbled the ball sixty yards into Colonel territory and beat the keeper from 14 yards out for his team-best seventh goal of the season (he also leads the team in points with 16). Robinson's two assists on the day tied him for most on the team with six this season.
Delaware Valley held a 17-14 advantage in shots while the Colonels had five corner attempts to the Aggies' one. Dave Marr played all 90 minutes in goal for Wilkes and made seven saves.
