WILKES-BARRE (PA) – King's College remained undefeated in Freedom Conference play as the Lady Monarchs rallied from a four-point halftime deficit and downed visiting Delaware Valley College, 79-69.
The win was the 19th in 22 overall contests for King's, including a perfect 11-0 in the conference. The Lady Monarchs also clinched the top seed for the Freedom playoffs, which begins in two weeks. The Aggies fell to 12-10 overall and 3-8 in the league.
Facing a 37-33 deficit at the break, King's opened the second half with 16 consecutive points, including six from Paige Carlin and four from Samantha Simcox. The Lady Monarchs built their advantage to as many as 18 before a late, 12-2 Delaware Valley run – seven by
Brenna Coll - made it a 73-65 ballgame with 1:40 remaining. However, King's Celia Rader hit a 3-pointer with the shot clock winding down to put the lead back to double digits and seal the win.
Both teams shot under 40 percent from the field, but a big difference was the foul line as King's made 41 trips in the contest (making 23), including 24 (making 16) in the second half alone. In fact, the second-half total was more free throws attempts than Delaware Valley had all game (15-for-17). King's also turned the ball over just six times while forcing 22 miscues.
Coll had a career night as the freshman was 9-for-19 from the field (2-for-5 from 3-point land) and 2-2 from the foul line for 22 points. Both of her treys and 12 of her points came in the first half as Delaware Valley led by as many as eight in those opening 20 minutes. She also added eight rebounds and four assists while playing the full 40 minutes on the evening.
Emily Soper registered a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards while
Sarah Delcasale came off the bench to notch 10 points.
Brittany Battinieri added nine points and seven assists in the loss.
Carlin came off the bench to lead King's with 20 points, including a 12-for-15 showing from the charity stripe. Simcox, Ashley Davies and Katlin Michaels had 13 points apiece.
