WILKES-BARRE (PA) –
Daulton Derr scored a career-high 24 points, including 16 in the second half, as Delaware Valley College won its second straight Freedom Conference game with a 70-66 road triumph over King's College.
The Aggies improved to 6-16 overall and 3-8 in the conference. They will next meet regionally-ranked and conference front-runner Misericordia University on Saturday, February 11 (1:00 p.m.). It will mark the third straight Saturday where a team atop the standings will make the trip to Doylestown. Delaware Valley has knocked the previous two from the perch with an overtime win over Wilkes University on January 28 and a victory over Eastern University on February 4. King's fell to 8-14 overall and 3-8 in the Freedom with Wednesday's setback.
Derr, a junior transfer, hit nine of 14 shots from the field and was perfect 6-for-6 from the foul line in 33 minutes of action. In fact, the team did not miss a free throw in 13 attempts in the game, including an 11-for-11 showing in the second half.
Derr helped the Aggies score the first nine points of the game as he connected on a pair of shots. Delaware Valley built the lead to 17-6 before King's answered with 19 of the next 27 to even things up with 1:15 remaining in the first half.
Jeremy Beckett and
Nathan Bollinger then each hit jumpers to give the Aggies a 29-25 lead at the intermission.
After an opening bucket by the Monarchs, Delaware Valley went on a 21-9 run for its largest lead of the game, 50-36, with 11:39 remaining. Beckett, Bollinger and Derr combined for 18 of the points with the remaining three coming on a bomb by
Jay Donovan.
Delaware Valley still had a double-digit lead at the midway point of the half when King's rallied behind the 3-point shooting of Matt Fiorino. He hit a trio of 3-pointers and Keyton Winder added a three-point play inside for a 12-2 run and a 54-54 ballgame with 6:44 to go.
The game was tied on two more occasions before a Derr jumper with 2:15 to go gave the Aggies a 62-60 advantage. Fiorino hit his sixth trey of the game 15 seconds later to put his team up one, but a Beckett jumper with 1:37 remaining and a pair of free throws by Derr with 28 ticks to go had Delaware Valley up three, 66-63.
King's Mike Foster was fouled with 11 seconds left, but managed to hit just one of two free throws for a two-point game. Donovan was sent to the line two seconds later and the freshman calmly hit two for a 68-64 score.
